Describing teachers

Hi guys! Welcome to a new post! Last week we were talking about describing learners and now it is our turn to talk about how to describe teachers. Let's learn more about this topic:

Before explaning this topic I would like you to ask yourself what ideas come to your mind when you think of your teachers performance either inside the classroom and outside the classroom.
For example:
Inside the classroom:
- The teacher give a lot of examples
- They are good public speakers

Outside the classroom:
- Are approachable
- Good listeners

Also there are some aspects that you need to take into account when describing teachers:

1- Teacher's role in the classroom
- You need to remember that teachers are the ones who control and direct every activity in the classroom, they are in charge of making the class interactive so that it captures the attention of the students.

2- The teacher as an organizer
- A teacher always need to study the subject he/ she is going to teach before the class. I have had the opportunity to work as an English teacher in a school and I have realized that no matter how small or simple we consider a subject is, it is always neccesary to study it beforehand.

3- Teachers as performers
- How teachers should perform? It depends on the activity that they are developing. For example: If it is a team game they should be energetically, encouragingly, clearly, etc.
I remember that my teacher who taught me English in kindergartern  explained the class by doing  role-play of Mr. Rabbit, it was just a puppet but thanks to his effort and creativity I was able to get interested in learning English.

4- Rapport
- It means the relationship that students have with the teacher and vice versa by recognizing,  listening, respecting,  and being impartial to students. (Harmer 2007)

5- The teacher as a teaching aid
- There are many resources available but nothing is more useful or generate more impact  than body language and expressions. To explain this point in a better way I want to share with you:

This picture was taken when I was in kindergarten, the lady who looks like she is jumping is Miss. Miriam, I loved her classes because she did not use just physical material  but she taught us through mimics and dances, even tday I still remember how much fun I had in her classes.

6- Non-native-speaker teacher vs. native- speaker teacher
- For a non- native-speaker it is easier to understand the learning process of his/ her students because they already gone through the same process.

-native- speaker teacher have the necessary confidence to be able to express themselves.
